A multitude of questions arise in my mind after watching this horror show. But one looms above them all. And that is: why the hell is Farage so angry? He attacks Rompuy for being a non-entity from a "non-country". What would he rather? Some big, charismatic figure from a powerful country with the clout to bring Farage's nightmare of a European superstate closer? Surely Farage should be pleased that the "president of Europe" has the charisma of a "damp rag". Doesn't that mean he can do less damage? Doesn't this suit UKIP?
At the risk of engaging in cod psychology, perhaps it's because Rompuy is so clearly not Europe's Bismarck, that Farage has turned puce with rage. UKIP would have us believe that the EU, like Napoleon's armies, is on the march and that Britain needs to get out now. It's harder for Farage to make us swallow that line with a grey figure like Rompuy in place. Hence the rage.
