Ben Chu: Hutton's frightening nuclear logic

Don’t scrap Trident says former defence secretary John Hutton in his interview with our political editor, Andy Grice, today. Why? Because: "Can you honestly say to the public that for the next 50 years we are not going to face the threat of nuclear blackmail or weapons of mass destruction? You can't".

And he's right. But that uncertainty applies to every country in the world. The logic of Hutton's reasoning is that any nation that lacks an independent nuclear deterrent is not taking its national security responsibilities seriously.

What message does that send to the likes of Japan, Brazil, South Africa, even Iran? Simple: build those nukes because you can never be sure what the future might bring. Or does Britain, unlike such countries, have a special right to protect itself from hypothetical nuclear blackmail?

one cannot very well advocate nuclear disarmament for others and not practice it oneself; either put up or shut up; fine words butter no parsnips
There is a maniac in the ME with nukes; Nazirael

And, based on this irrefutable logic, Iran should get the bomb as soon as possible; Israel is a bully who is destabilising the whole area so the sooner balance is restored the better. But, our leaders cry 'foul' without, on the face of it, bothering to link this to the unutterable indeed ineffable cruelties forced on Palestinians and Palestine by thieving, lying cheating Nazirael and Israelis.
Mr Hutton's so-called logic ...

... is just another illustration of the reasons why an increasingly number of electors are utterly disillusioned with the ranks of main party establishment politicians.

They can't even muster an argument. Still, anything that advances the death of mindless, tribal voting has its bright side.
