John Rentoul: Down the toilet

There is a lot of it about, and today's Populus poll, giving the Conservatives an eight-point lead, down from the current average of 12 points, will only mean more.

Labour's core vote strategy. Tax the rich. Bash a banker. Put Harriet Harman on Radio 5 Live. It gives me the chance to use my favourite James Carville quotation. The genius of Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign, on how George Bush Sr made a mistake in trying to shore up the Republican right wing:

Whenever I hear a campaign talk about a need to energise its base, that's a campaign that's going down the toilet.

All's Fair: Love, War and Running for President, p207.

What would you do?

There's never many replies to you, and normally there are no replies at all. And you are by far the most frequent poster on Eagle Eye, constantly advertised on the front page of the independent.co.uk

It must be disappointing for the Independent to have their most prolific and most-advertised writer practically always ignored by the readers.

Why not suggest what you would do instead of taxing the rich. It might attract more response. Another way to increase your popularity might be to stop revering Tony Blair.
